Age check at the door in Argentina: how to run an 18+ event

By SOMOS DER · October 30, 2026 · 6 min read

An over-18 event is controlled in two places: at registration, where the condition is written down and the person accepts it, and at the door, where someone looks at an ID document before letting them in. The QR code does not prove age: it proves that the person is registered and has not entered before. If there is a bar, Argentina's Law 24,788 also prohibits selling alcohol to anyone under 18 anywhere in the country. This guide is for promoters, agencies and brands from abroad running an adults-only party, launch or show in Argentina.

Why age is a separate check

It is tempting to think that if the form asks for a date of birth and the system rejects minors, the problem is solved. It is not: anyone can type a date that is not theirs. An online registration cannot see a document, so the age that arrives with the sign-up is a statement, not a verification.

That is why the age check has to happen at the door, run by a person, and separately from validating the QR code. They are two different questions. «Is this person on the list?» is answered by the scanner. «Is this person 18?» is answered by the ID.

What the law says

Law 24,788, Argentina's national law against alcoholism, prohibits throughout the national territory the sale of any kind of alcoholic drink to people under eighteen (article 1) and punishes the offense with a fine or the closure of the premises or establishment (article 14), with heavier penalties for repeat offenses. The law does not say how to check age, but if your event has a bar, the organizer or the owner of the venue is the one who answers for it.

For the door itself, the framework is Law 26,370 on admission and permanence control, the national law behind what Argentines call the «derecho de admisión» (right of admission). Its article 11 includes, among the cases in which control staff can refuse entry, people under 18 when that age is mandatory by law. Its article 30 requires the grounds for admission to be written, readable and visible at every public entrance. An age condition that is not on the sign is harder to uphold in front of the person left outside.

Provinces and municipalities often have their own rules on opening hours, nightlife venues and minors. Before the event, check with the office that licenses venues in the jurisdiction where you are producing.

What to ask at registration

Registration does not verify age, but it does put the door in order. Three things to settle there:

In PASE each attendee receives their QR code by email, with the badge in PDF. That email is a good place to repeat the condition: «Bring your ID, no entry without it». The registration page and the email are available in Spanish and English, so foreign guests read the rule in a language they understand.

What to check at the door

The order matters, because it decides where the queue forms.

If the event mixes audiences (for example, a party with one area with a bar and another without alcohol), you can handle it with different attendee types and the permission matrix by sector: each type has its own registration link, and at the check-in point of the area with the bar the scanner answers not authorized for anyone who does not belong there. Even so, age is still checked by a person.

How many people you need

Checking an ID takes longer than scanning a QR code. If you are going to ask everyone for ID, that step will be the bottleneck, not the scanner. Time the check during a rehearsal and size the line from that: sometimes it is better to have one person checking documents before the scanning line, instead of the same operator doing both. For the calculation, see how many check-in points and staff your event needs.

What not to do

The QR code answers whether they are on the list. The ID answers whether they are 18. Those are two checks, and you do both.

Frequently asked questions

Is the QR code enough to prove that a person is over 18?

No. The QR code proves that the person registered and has not entered before, but anyone can register declaring an age. Age is verified at the door with an ID document, and that check is done by a person, not by the scanner.

What does Argentine law say about selling alcohol to minors?

Law 24,788 prohibits the sale of any alcoholic drink to people under 18 throughout the country, and sets fines or the closure of the venue for the offense. If your event has a bar, the age check is not optional.

Can I turn away a minor who has a ticket?

Yes. Law 26,370 includes people under 18, when that age is mandatory by law, among the cases in which control staff can refuse admission. It is best to have the condition written on the admission sign and on the registration page.

Do I need to store each attendee's date of birth?

Think twice. The more personal data you ask for, the more you have to protect. For most events a declaration at registration and an ID check at the door are enough, without copying the ID number.
